The Vizcaya Museum & Gardens are located along the Biscayne Bay in Miami. They are reminiscent of Italy meets France meets Miami. It appears to be very historic when in fact it was built in the early 1900s. Spend the morning exploring the grounds and learning about the former villa of Chicago businessman James Deering.

About the Museum & Gardens
The museum website mentions that the museum is a “place of intellectual stimulation, compelling us to consider the relationships between native and foreign, old and new, and natural and designed.” This is quite true as visitors walk in and wonder where the home was from. What inspired it? One moment I thought I was in Venice, and another in the South of France.
Fun fact: despite looking European and historic was built in the early 1900s. The architects designed the home with a European-American-Miami style.
Tips for Visiting the Museum & Gardens
- Go early. Just like any travel advice you’ll see here on Palm Trees & Pellegrino, we recommend visiting early. Go right when they open to find parking and avoid the crowds.
- Snag the discounts (bring you IDs). There are quite a few discounts on tickets. There are discounts for senior citizens, military, AAA and students. Make sure to bring your IDs!
- Don’t miss the Gazebo. From the platform overlooking the bay behind the house, make sure to walk to the left and right on the edges. There is a hidden gazebo on the right side.
- Start with the gardens and end in the museum. More often than not, the weather in Miami is humid. Walk through the gardens first and end in the air conditioned museum. You’ll thank us later!
- Take the tour if you have extra time. There is an audio tour offered which costs an extra $5 at the entrance. If you have some extra time, take the tour to learn more about the home.
