The Old Town area of San Diego is one of the city’s top attractions. However, it is often overlooked by locals for being too “touristy.” We’re sharing some of our favorite hidden (and not so hidden) spots in the area that get our locals stamp of approval! Keep reading for our list of 7 things to do in Old Town.
Stop for Coffee at Garden Coffee
Start your day with coffee and a pastry at Garden Coffee. The name of this coffee shop is perfectly fitting as it feels like a scene out of the Secret Garden. If you don’t know it’s there, you may just walk on by. If you’re not in a rush, this is the perfect spot to read a book or catch up on the news.
- Location: 2611 Congress St, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: After grabbing your cup of joe check out Honest Thrift Studio for carefully curated thrifted finds and plants.
Go Shopping at Bazaar del Mundo
Tucked away at the entrance of Old Town is the Bazaar del Mundo, a treasure trove of finds from across the world. Owned by local business icon and philanthropist Diane Powers, Bazaar del Mundo is a carefully curated group of shops. Not only is it the perfect spot for tourists on the hunt for a souvenir, it is also a locals’ favorite for unique gifts. From housewares, to home decor, to fashion accessories, there’s something for everyone.
- Location: 4133 Taylor St, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: Carve out at least an hour to walk through the bazaar (and bring your camera)! There are plenty of photo ops mixed in amongst the beautiful items.
Have Afternoon Tea at Coral Tree Tea House
Coral Tree Tea House has one of the most authentic afternoon tea services I’ve seen in California. You’ll find yourself sipping on tea in a historic Victorian home while enjoying a surprisingly huge feast of scones, desserts, and sandwiches. Make sure you make a reservation a few weeks in advance as it gets quite booked!
- Location: 2490 Heritage Park Row, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: After stuffing yourself with delicious treats, walk around Heritage County Park to take a look at the historic homes.
Walk around Heritage County Park
After afternoon tea, walk around Heritage County Park. This park is made up of San Diego homes with Victorian architecture from the 1880s – 1890s. They were moved to the park and restored for visitors to enjoy. Interested in learning about its potentially *spooky* past? Check out the story on Hidden San Diego.
- Location: 2454 Heritage Park Row, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: This is a great spot for photos and is often not very busy.
Have a Picnic at Presidio Park
Presidio Park feels like an often forgotten picnic spot when compared to spots like Balboa Park or Kate Sessions. If you’re looking for something a little less crowded, Presidio is perfect! The park is made up of five areas – Inspiration Point, Palm Canyon, Padre Cross, The Arbor and Mission Hills Park, so there’s a lot of seating to choose from.
- Location: 2811 Jackson St, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: Explore the park before you pick your picnic spot. When we visited after quite a bit of exploring, we settled on spot surrounded by beautiful weeping willows.
Enjoy Taco Tuesday at Cafe Coyote
Next up on our list of things to do in Old Town is Taco Tuesday at Cafe Coyote. San Diego is booming with Mexican restaurants – from chic and expensive to hole-in-the-wall and cheap – there are so many options!
Locals may not immediately think of Old Town as a must-visit when it comes to Mexican food. But here’s the secret: Taco Tuesday. Cafe Coyote has a fun atmosphere and their specials of $8 margaritas and $3.50 tacos on Tuesdays.
- Location: 2461 San Diego Ave, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: Fun for a girls’ night out or date night.
Grab Drinks at Tahona Bar
Restaurant critics call Tahona a “breathe of fresh air” on the Old Town restaurant scene. Walking in you can totally see why. This spot is beautiful, elevated, and completely different from the rest of the area. Think: traditional Oaxaca cuisine with a modern twist.
Whether you stop by for a mezcal tasting, going for cocktails, or looking for a dinner option; Tahona fits the bill.
- Location: 2414 San Diego Ave, San Diego, CA 92110
- Pro Tip: They also serve brunch on weekends!
