It’s not always easy going out with friends when you have a dietary restriction. If you have a sweet tooth, being gluten free can feel like the worst thing ever. Also, not all cafes and bakeries have gluten free options, and those that do don’t taste that good. However, large cities like San Francisco have made some great progress – it’s all about knowing where to look. Looking for the best gluten free bakery in San Francisco? Here are 8 best gluten free bakeries in San Francisco, CA.
(Note: For those with Celiac, only #1 and #2 on this list are fully gluten-free kitchens as the other bakeries do run the risk of cross contamination.)
1. Mariposa Baking Company
Mariposa Baking Company is one of the only strictly gluten free bakeries on my list. Located in the Ferry Building, it’s the perfect all-stop shop, featuring a breakfast and lunch menu of hot food items along with freshly baked breads, cookies, muffins, and more! Grab some pastries to go in the morning along with some Blue Bottle coffee or Dandelion drinking chocolate (both located a few merchants down), or even pick up some of their frozen gluten free pasta to make at home.
- Neighborhood: Embarcadero
- Address: One, Ferry Building, The Embarcadero #32, San Francisco, CA 94111
- What we tried:
- Morning bun
- Cinnamon bun (ask for this warmed up, you’ll thank me later)
- Chocolate chunk cookie
2. Wholesome Bakery
Wholesome Bakery is a 100% gluten free, strictly vegan bakery with a mission to deliver high quality, allergy friendly, guilt-free goodies! Pick any sweet treat from their mouthwatering display (it took me several minutes to pick just two) as a dessert to any item on their seasonal harvest menu. Their cafe is also enviably instagrammable, with high ceilings, wooden furniture, and plants galore.
- Neighborhood: Panhandle
- Address: 299 Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94117
- What we tried:
- Almond tea cake
- Marzipan chocolate truffle
3. Jane the Bakery
With multiple locations on Geary, Fillmore, and Larkin, Jane the Bakery is a highly popular stop on weekend mornings. For consistency’s sake, I went with my trusty sidekick Dante the St. Bernard to all 3 locations and we were not disappointed. My breakdown is as follows:
Jane on Geary
- Neighborhood: Fillmore District
- Address: 1881 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94115
- Vibe: This location felt the most like a true bakery. It smelled like fresh baked bread and cookies, and had the widest variety of food. The line curves around but moves quite fast, leaving you with little time to decide which of the many gluten-free options suits your fancy.
- What we tried (yes, Dante had the smallest bite!):
- Banana Bread
- Snickerdoodle cookie
Jane on Larkin
- Neighborhood: Tenderloin
- Address: 925 Larkin St, San Francisco, CA 94115
- Vibe: Although not located in the most welcoming neighborhoods, Jane on Larkin is a cute, bustling cafe on an otherwise gloomy street. It has the best seating of the 3 locations, so I would recommend this location if you’re looking to spend a few hours working or catching up with a friend over a cup of coffee.
- What we tried: Pumpkin muffin
Jane on Fillmore
- Neighborhood: Pacific Heights
- Address: 2123 Fillmore St, San Francisco, CA 94115
- Vibe: This Jane is the best lunch spot, with restaurant-style decor and proper table seating that lines a narrow walkway. It’s certainly the most aesthetic of the three locations, given the statement wallpaper and bright yellow seats. The best part about Jane on Fillmore is that you can walk off your food coma by browsing the many shops in the area.
- Note: Sunday brunch & lunch are extremely busy at this location, so I would recommend coming before 10 AM or after 1 PM.
(In other words: Geary for bakery, Larkin for cafe, Fillmore for restaurant)
4. Arizmendi Bakery
Arizmendi Bakery is the perfect stop to grab a muffin from their tall, jam-packed display cases and enjoy it on their outdoor wooden benches in the warm morning sun. They are a worker-owned cooperative specializing in morning pastries, artisan breads, and gourmet pizzas (of which only the pastries are gluten free), and they even have a location in Oakland for you East Bay folks.
- Neighborhood: Mission
- Address: 1272 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110
- What we tried:
- Carrot muffin
- Ricciarelli (almond cookie)
5. 20th Century Cafe
20th Century Cafe had perhaps the cutest decor of all the bakeries I visited in this gluten-free quest. A corner cafe with a vintage ice-cream cart (solely for decoration) outside, marbled tabletops, and aesthetic pastries filling glass domed plates, the vibes instantly transported me to a cozy European cafe. Not to mention, the menu itself draws inspiration from the specialties of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.
- Neighborhood: Hayes Valley
- Address: 198 Gough St, San Francisco, CA 94102
- What we tried:
- Apricot walnut torte (you could perfectly see each layer, it was a treat for the eyes)
6. Johnny Doughnuts
I must admit, I found this place entirely on accident on a quiet Sunday morning, but I am so thrilled that I did. Johnny Doughnuts features exactly one wheat-free item on their menu – their wheat-free “Fritter Thang” – and it was warm, gooey, studded with chunks of apple, and the closest thing to an actual doughnut that I have ever experienced. Not to mention their seating area is highly picture-friendly.
- Neighborhood: Hayes Valley
- Address: 392 Fulton St, San Francisco, CA 94102
- What we tried: Wheat-free Fritter Thang
7. Batter Bakery
Battery Bakery is a more hole-in-the-wall location, as the storefront is tucked away on a quieter street. However, the smell that welcomed me when I stepped inside was instantly mouth-watering, and they even had modest, cozy seating! What I appreciated the most was their gluten free warning labels, providing important information to anyone with a legitimate disease or allergy.
- Neighborhood: Nob Hill
- Address: 1517 Pine St, San Francisco, CA 94109
- What we tried: Chocolate Fog Cookie
8. Sift Dessert Bar
Once again, Sift Dessert Bar was not on my original list of gluten-free bakeries to scope out, but the pretty storefront drew me in. They offer a vanilla and chocolate gluten free cupcake, with your choice of frosting and toppings. This may seem simple, but given their extensive list of frostings, you could be sampling different combinations forever!
- Neighborhood: Pacific Heights
- Address: 2411 California St, San Francisco, CA 94115
- What we tried: Vanilla cupcake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting
Honorable Mentions
Some other bakeries that I considered for my top 8 list include:
- Noe Valley Bakery
- SusieCakes (I would recommend placing an order for one of their larger, layered cakes – perfect for any big event!)
- Whole Cakes
