One of my favorite spring activities in San Diego is strawberry picking. And while I’m in the area, I like to combine it with a trip to the Carlsbad Flower Fields (which unfortunately for this year are closed due to COVID-19). So today we’re talking about everything you need to know about San Diego strawberry picking at the u-pick fields.
About the Carlsbad Strawberry Company
Founded in Carlsbad in the 1950s, this 4th generation strawberry company isn’t only a spring stop for strawberry picking. Depending on the season, you can pick pumpkins, stop by for fresh produce or stop by their stand for some strawberries if you don’t have time to u-pick! You can check out their events on their website.
Getting to the San Diego Strawberry Fields & General Information:
- Address: 1050 Cannon Rd Carlsbad, CA 92008
- Hours: Monday – Sunday 9 AM – 6 PM during strawberry season (usually February – July). Check the website before visiting for the latest information.
How to get to the fields from:
- San Diego: ~30 minutes
- Del Mar: ~15 minutes
- Orange County: ~1 hour
Admission Prices: Personally, I recommend also picking strawberries, not just going for the photos. Because let’s be real – part of the fun of the photos is having a cute little bucket of strawberries to snack on!
- If you just want to go in and take photos – $5
- Small bucket and 1 ticket (entrance for one to the fields) – $10
- Large bucket and 2 tickets (entrance for two to the fields) – $22
Know before you go: Tips for visiting
1 ) Go Early! Head there early in the season and get there right in the morning when they open to skip the lines and people.
2 ) Head to the farthest part of the field. You’ll find better photo ops, less people, and more strawberries.
3 ) Don’t pick them too ripe. Unless you’re planning to eat them immediately, I would opt for the strawberries that aren’t super ripe.
4 ) A few photo tips… I recommend wearing a hat. The downside of arriving right in the morning is potentially harsh and sunny lighting. For the best photos wear a hat to avoid the shadows.
