By the time we reached Zion National Park on our whirlwind California to Utah road trip, we were tired. Not to mention that due to the pandemic things were operating a little differently in Zion. (We’ll get to that in a bit) That left us researching things to do in the area. That’s where horseback riding in Zion comes in. It’s unique and a great way to visit the park!
* A note on Zion during the pandemic*
We visited Zion over the fourth of July weekend, shortly after they re-opened. Shuttles required buying passes the day before, and the scenic drive was only open to bikers, walkers, and the shuttles. This highly impacted our itinerary. For the latest news on Zion visit their website.
About Horseback Riding in Zion
The company that runs the horseback riding is called “Canyon Rides.” They also offer tours in Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon. Below are a few key details
- Season: March – October
- Reservation Options: The Virginia River Ride is 1 hour ($45) and then Sand Beach Trail is 3 hours ($90)
The Virginia River Ride passes by the river and takes you on a visit to the Court of the Patriarchs. We opted for the Sand Beach Trail which takes you by the Three Patriarchs, the Beehives and the cactus garden. This is a great way to see the park without hiking, but be aware it’s still a workout (we were sore for a few days after).
Tips for going Horseback Riding in Zion:
We weren’t sure what to expect on our ride, so here are a few tips that will help you along the way.
- Bandana, hat & sunscreen are a must. Especially if you’re touring in the summer, it can get past 100 degrees. A hat and sunscreen will absolutely save you! And regardless of season, a bandana is a must. With all the horses on the tour, they kick up a lot of dust. By the end of the trail I was coughing up dust!
- Bring a strap for your phone or camera. Bags aren’t allowed on the horses, and you’ll want to take photos throughout the ride. Attach a strap to your phone or camera for easy access. You don’t want to drop your phone and hold up the whole group!
- Hydrate before the ride. The ride is basically you and your phone. All other items needs to be left in your car. Hydrate before you leave. They do however provide ample water at the midway point of the ride (as well as bathrooms)!
