Continuing our Highway 1 series, next up is Half Moon Bay. Looking for something to do for the day from San Jose or San Francisco? Consider a day trip to Half Moon Bay, California. Even though Half Moon Bay is a great summer getaway spot, you can still visit in the heart of winter for a cozy experience.
Day trip to Half Moon Bay, California
Breakfast, Pastries & Coffee at Moonside Bakery & Cafe
When I take day trips, I like to start with a light breakfast that usually consists of a pastry and coffee. Moonside Bakery, off the HMB Main Street fits the bill! They have plenty of seating, an array of pastries, as well as some heartier dishes.
Other breakfast options that I’ve received recommendations for & read a lot about:
Walk & Shop on Main Street
Downtown Half Moon Bay is quaint and perfect for a post-coffee walk. Check out the historic jail (which is more cute than scary) where you can learn about the history of the town or stop by the Garden Apothecary for some unique gifts. I like to pop into the Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel Co. which has a very old-world feel.
Check out the Farmer’s Market **
One of the main reasons I recommend visiting Half Moon Bay in the Summer or Fall is to be able to visit the farmer’s market. Though it’s small, produce seemed very reasonably priced.
Note: The farmer’s market is on Saturday’s 9 AM – 1 PM, May 1 – December 22nd
Drive along Highway 1 up to Half Moon Bay Harbor
I discovered the Harbor on my most recent trip to HMB and was so surprised! None of the research I had done about the town pointed to an area outside of the main street! The harbor is a great spot to walk around and have lunch (if you don’t end up back in the downtown).
Some local recommendations:
Stop for Lunch at Fisherman’s Taverna
The Fisherman’s Taverna is a pretty unassuming little spot. And if I’m being honest, I might not have casually stopped to eat there had I not read all the amazing reviews on their Yelp page. That being said, this might have been the BEST clam chowder I’ve had in my entire life. Portions were huge, everything tasted fresh and I’d 100% go back. It may not be Instagrammable, but my stomach thanked me.
Walk along the Half Moon Bay State Beach
Lastly, before you head out of town, go for a walk along the Half Moon Bay State Beach. You can walk in the sand or take one of the walking paths around the grounds.
Pro Tip: Don’t want to pay the $10 for parking? Park in the residential area that is about a 5-10 minute walk from the beach.
BONUS: Stop for photos at a wild flower field
Near the end of winter and beginning of spring you might run into fields of wild flowers. Of course, I had to make a quick stop for some photos and to frolic in the flowers! I found this field off of highway 1 between the Harbor and the downtown.
