The 2019 California superblooms have been all over social media lately due to all the crazy rain. All my research came up with where to find flower fields in Southern California. Living in the Bay Area, I knew I wouldn’t have time to make the trip don there. Which is why I went on a full on investigation to figure out where to find the flower fields in Northern California. I trekked through marshes, drove up and down Highway 1, just so you wouldn’t have to! Keep reading for info on where to go, tips for taking the best pictures, and more!
Where to find the flower fields in Northern California
When to visit the flower fields
I noticed that wild flowers started mid- February, but went into full bloom by mid March. Bay Area locals say that the flower fields usually last through mid- April. As the season might change a bit every year, I would recommend going on Instagram and checking the geo-location before heading out. You’ll be able to see what the flower status is.
Visiting the flower fields in Half Moon Bay
You can find the flower fields in Half Moon Bay driving up and down Highway 1. That being said, while there are a lot of fields, I noticed that 95% are on private property with big “No Trespassing” signs and big fences. I attempted to visit a few that were along the side of the road and not on private property, and ended up ankle deep in marsh water. Here are a couple of spots to visit the flower fields:
- Oceano Hotel & Spa – Located next to the Oceano Hotel & Spa, this is the field I shot in for the photos in this post. It is also the only field I found that not only had yellow wild flowers, but orange ones too!
- Highway 1 & Main Street (across from Wells Fargo Bank) – Easily accessible field of yellow wild flowers off the side of the road
- 378 San Mateo Road – Lastly, I found another patch while entering Half Moon Bay along Highway 92 right next to the HV Produce stand.
