Next, in my home decor series, we styled our family room with assorted pieces that tie in our home’s overall Mediterranean theme. We mixed antiques (our gallery wall), with modern (our couch). Like the office, I used Canva Pro to create a vision board to plan the perfect living space. If you’re redecorating or designing a space for the first time, I highly recommend using this tool. Canva really helped in our quest to build the perfect gallery wall above the couch.
Living Room Decor Ideas: Design the Room Starting with the Couch
The Feathers Room couch is incredibly soft, adding elegance to the room while being comfortable at the same time. I found the throw pillows from Home Goods and Moniker, which helped pull the couch area together and create the optimal comfort level for lounging in this space.
I filled the area next to the couch with this gorgeous Olive tree from Amazon, which may be one of my favorite decor pieces in the house. It may be artificial, but it gives all the real vibes of a true olive tree. It’s a story for another time, but I searched high and low for a realistic olive tree!
For other items like the coffee table, books, and candles, I thrifted a lot of them, but I found similar pieces to help you effortlessly style your space. You can check them out below.
How to Style a Media Console
We styled our media console below the TV on the wall opposite the couch. The console’s fluted details and stylish brass accents really stood out when we shopped for furniture pieces. It also provides a ton of storage to hide cords, games, and the not-so-aesthetic necessities. Stylish and functional – that’s a win-win.
Nothing pulls a space together quite like a rug. We choose this hand-woven chunky natural jute Farmhouse area rug from Amazon. It comes in tons of sizes, so you can include this rug to complete the room no matter how large your space is!
3 Tips for Styling your Family Room
- Pick your aesthetic. (And make sure it works for the whole family). My fiancé and I spent quite a while discussing what this room was going to be like. We wanted some that told a story while being comfortable and ideal for hosting. A white couch was of course a risk but I love it!
- Determine your furniture stars. This doesn’t necessarily need to be furniture (it could be artwork). But you need to decide who your star (or stars) of the show are! For us, the gallery wall made of 1800s wallpaper was a must. Another star was our 1960s coffee table.
- Take your time decorating! I once read that you never “finish” decorating a home. Take your time decorating. We picked up a few pieces from estate sales, others from Amazon, and some from our travels. Don’t be afraid to have some empty space for a while.
