When it comes to traveling, I live for staying in places with a story. The more historic, unique and off the beaten path, the better! I love to come back and tell everyone I know about locations unknown. Nestled off route 166 in the Santa Barbara desert is Cuyama Buckhorn. On my recent road trip through Southern California, I had the opportunity to stay at Cuyama Buckhorn and can’t wait to come back!
About Cuyama Buckhorn
Cuyama Buckhorn is a roadside restaurant & inn located in Santa Barbara County. It’s been around since the 50’s and is considered an obligatory stop since it’s ideally located off of highway 166. I’m calling it now – this area is going to be the next Joshua Tree/ desert getaway. The aesthetic of mid-century design meets Western influence of Cuyama is absolutely gorgeous!
The details: There are 21 rooms and lots of relaxing space around the inn. On a summer evening you can enjoy a movie in the courtyard while roasting marshmallows at the fire pits. Coming soon to the property is a in-house spa and pool for a luxurious getaway. Their menu changes based on the season and there are various culinary events that happen throughout the year.
Fun fact about the inn: they got their name due to all the buckheads hung up around the property. Over the years local hunters have donated them to the inn. It was quite the honor to have your buckhead displayed.
How to Get There from:
This little getaway is perfect for Southern Californians (or if you’re up for a little road trip Northern Californians too). We came from Santa Barbara which was ideal for taking the extremely scenic route through the Los Padres National Forest.
- Los Angeles – 2.5 hours North
- Santa Barbara – 2 hours East
- San Luis Obispo – 1 hour 20 minutes Southeast
- San Francisco – 5 hours South
The Sleeping Situation
Wow. I mean talk about a nod to the past and the future at the same time. The rooms are sleek, retro, and pay a nod to the Cuyama Buckhorn history. They recently underwent a renovation and are so cozy. An added adorable element? We were greeted with a s’more kit to enjoy later in the evening after dinner.
The Food Situation
Note from 5/25: The restaurant and cafe are currently open for takeout only from 11AM- 3PM daily during the pandemic.
The Inn features two restaurants – The Buck Stop Coffee Shop and the Buckhorn Restaurant & Bar.
The Buck Stop Coffee Shop
The coffee shop, with their adorable mustard yellow mugs serves Verve Coffee and Teapigs tea. They have in-house made pastries, and be sure to pick up a locally made souvenir while there! Whether you’re driving through or staying at the Inn, stop by for a cup of jo’ and breakfast.
The Buckhorn Restaurant & Bar
There is a lot happening at the restaurant and bar. We’re talking locally sourced ingredients, a rotating seasonal menu, and various events. Depending on when you visit, you may run across live music, a visiting chef or a special event. You can learn more about their events and culinary program here.
We enjoyed a lovely dinner on our patio due to the restaurant currently being takeout only. However, I loved overlooking the courtyard with olive trees and a sunset.
What we ordered:
- Housemade chili
- Santa Maria Tri-Tip (an absolute must-try)
- Pork Loin Tacos
- Harvest Salad
Instagrammable Spots at the Cuyama Buckhorn
If you love aesthetic and Instagrammable spots, the inn is an absolute must-visit. (But I’m sure you knew that already from the other photos above). For the best photo time, wake up early and roam the grounds to find hidden corners. I especially loved the rustic chairs, the vintage sign in front of the inn and the hanging lights.
