Another year has come and gone, and suddenly we’re at that point… where I share my NYFW Spring/Summer 2019 Recap. Remember last year’s FW? If you’re interested in checking out that post you can see it here. Compared to last year, this year was so much more of a whirlwind! (Maybe because I was only in NYC for 3 full days). My goals this time around were to 1) visit new places in the city and 2) step up my outfit game. I think I can successfully say I checked those off the list.
NYFW Spring/Summer 2019 Recap
NYFW 2019 Day 1 : Hong Kong Fashion
[ WHAT I WORE ]
For my first show of the week, the squad and I opted for a red and white color palette. We had just arrived from a red-eye so I went for something more sporty chic. Can someone say “comfort first?” We hustled from the airport to drop off our luggage at the Airbnb, to shoot at the Flatiron Building, to Industria for the Hong Kong Fashion Show.

The show featured three designers (and I loved how different each one was) –
- 112 mountainyam – The first designer is what I would call “nature-camo-chic.” They played a lot with this traditional militaristic color palette and silhouette, but brought in modernity with the bright colors, layers, and mix of fabrics. My favorite look of the show was actually the first one on the left. Suits for women have been big this season, and I loved the spin on the traditional gray men’s suit.
- Anveglosa – If I had to describe the collection in one word it would be “leather.” I loved that designer Annette Chan brought us to a more traditional New York/ Paris style with the dark monochrome and fitted colors. It was all in the details, and if I’m being honest I found quite a few things I would wear in real life.
- Heaven Please + – The Heaven Please + collection reminded me of a Spring Fling dance. Pastels, prints and fun hair styles really screamed “spring.” Interestingly, this collection reminded me a lot of what I was seeing as part of the street style of this year’s NYFW.
NYFW 2019 Day 2 : Oxford Fashion & Sustainable Fashion Day
[ WHAT I WORE ]
The overarching theme for most of my outfits this Fashion Week was “Sicilian Vintage” – as most of my looks featured pieces from my Italian family’s vintage closets. It really was an homage to my roots. It was a pretty cold day in the city, so I opted to use my silk scarf as makeshift beanie, and belted the bulky sweater to bring the waist in. I also paired my leather tights under a corduroy skirt.

[ABOUT THE SHOW – OXFORD FASHION ]
Photos by Oxford Fashion Studio
I felt super #blessed to sit in the front row for Oxford Fashion’s show at Pier 59 that featured 5 different designers. Each designer was so unique that despite the record number of looks, every moment was just as exciting as the first.
Featured Designers:
- Chaahat Thakker –Chaahat Thakker’s collection reminded me of arts and crafts time (but in a good way). The construction of the pieces, along with the color scheme reminded me of wearable art. The clothes brought together different elements of media including sculpture, kirigami, and collage.
- Poli & Jo – Instead of clothing, Poli & Jo (based in London) showcased their convertible and stylish cotton bags.
- Farah Naz – Farah’s designs were all in the details – from the hand embroidered materials (sequins, pearls, Swarovski crystals) to the mixture of fabrics which included tulle, lace, and silk.
- Ron Ramos – Ron Ramo’s collection was extremely ready to wear while being high-end and chic. Each piece in the collection could be worn in a very simple manner and be built up to be more extravagant and detailed. All the looks read “down-stated girl boss”
- Seray Sacan – Seray’s collection reminded me a lot of the upcycling trend we’re seeing in fashion right now. Take something old and make it new again. Which makes sense considering the designer strives to be eco-friendly in her creations with the use of naturally dyed fabrics, and cruelty silks.
- Jisu Lim – When art meets politics – that’s how I would describe Jisu Lim’s pieces that closed out the show. The collection was inspired by the Post No Bill’ sign around construction areas and the juxtaposition between the ugliness of the sites and the idea of keeping them clean of advertisements.

Planet Fashion TV‘s “Sustainable Fashion Day” was part panel discussion, part fashion show, and part concert. The idea behind the event was to educate attendees on how fashion can and should be sustainable.
Panelists featured included Oliver Tolentino of Beverly Hills, Stacey Chung the designer of Veerah Vegan shoes, Angela Clark the
designer of sustainable Accessories, and Bridgett Artise a sustainable fashion expert.

NYFW 2019 Day 3 – Hakan Akkaya & Global Fashion Collective
[ WHAT I WORE ]
For this show, I further delved into that Sicilian vintage look, but this time going more for Versace vibes with a mix of colors (green and maroon) and textures.

[ ABOUT THE SHOW – HAKAN AKKAYA ]

Can I just say this was my favorite show of FW? I was so inspired by this Turkish designer’s show at Spring Studios, and being in the FROW, all the tiny details really came to life! Hakan Akkaya‘s show was an homage to a 1970s Glam Rock concert. There was such high energy and each of the looks was incredibly different and engaging. The show was filled with metallics, spikes, studs, and a range of different patterns.
[ ABOUT THE SHOW – GLOBAL FASHION COLLECTIVE ]
Photos by Giovanni Giannoni
The Global Fashion Collective show at Pier 59 was my last one of the week, featuring four different international designers.
Featured Designers included:
- FAUN by Marisa P. Clark– Canadian designer Marisa Clark brought together a whimsical and feminine vibe to create her style. It was all very Blair Waldorf meets a forest nymph. The collection featured rich color tones and fabrics.
- Kirsten Ley – The collection, titled “Naissance,” revolved around the theme of the rebirth of her label, moving in the direction of traditional Parisian fashion. However, the pieces did have an avant-garde spin despite a darker color scheme.
- ERXI X MRHUA MRSHUA – This collection brought me back to my day’s in the markets in Hong Kong and mainland China. I would call this traditional souvenirs meet trendy styles. I loved how they incorporated mini models to showcase some of the clothing and featured a bright and quirky color palette.
- M.E. – M.E. closed the show with an entirely black and white collection that focused on more fall/ winter designs.
