When it comes to Winter season, I typically love the traditional red & green palette. But lately I’ve been seriously into two things – camel tones and cozy looks. For today’s post, I went with a spin off of the monochromatic look that hit the runway this season. Its perfect for a day at the mall, a cozy chic lunch, or really just a day where you want to look nice without trying to hard. My camel coat (which I got last year at Zara, you can find a similar one here) is one that I’ve worn over and over again. It’s such an important staple in every girl’s wardrobe!
STYLING YOUR CAMEL COAT
I mean… the possibilities for styling are really endless. That can be a little overwhelming and I have some other examples of how’ve I’ve styled my coat in the past (keep reading). For today’s look I elevated an otherwise cozy holiday shopping outfit with a structured coat. For added chic points, throw it over your shoulders. If you really look at the outfit it’s just a sporty bag (you can find it here), an oversized sweater dress and some slides. I think the coat adds a little je ne sais quoi.

FINDING THE PERFECT CAMEL COAT
As a staple piece, I would splurge. Now, not only is it actually hard to find the perfect coat, but for someone fresh out of college or on a budget, you may not be able to invest yet. And that’s totally okay. There are plenty of coats out there that can last a couple seasons and work for the time being. The one I’m wearing above was under $100 at Zara.
But there are three things I would call out when looking for the perfect coat:
- FIT – Sizing here really matters. You don’t want to be flooding in fabric since these coats can go from “chic” to “frumpy” in the blink of an eye. Make sure the sleeves are long enough and the jacket fits well around the shoulders before committing.
- BUTTONS – Growing up with a grandmother who is a seamstress, buttons are a major topic in our household. A lot of brands can make something look expensive, but then skimp on the buttons. You could easily change out the buttons, but if you’re like me who 1) can’t sew and 2) doesn’t have time for that – just pay attention to that little detail.
- FABRIC – I’ll be honest and say that I’ll be needing to replace my coat in a few months as it’s really starting to look worn. I’ve been on the hunt this season for a new coat and I’ve noticed that a lot of stores have camel coats that look like they’re pilling. FYI that automatically cheapens your jacket. You can totally be bougie on a budget, but a pilling jacket is a no no.
Pro Tip: Looking for a jacket that looks like a million bucks without the crazy price tag? I like to check out what the designer materials look and feel like. Once you know what quality looks like, you can more easily find a dupe.
