I came across the “Salineras de Maras” basically by accident. I had already had a general idea of my trip’s itinerary, when I thought I’d give one last look at Pinterest (you can check out my Peru board here) to see if there was anything new. That’s when a photo of the Salineras de Maras, also known as salt pans popped up.
[ About the Salineras de Maras ]
Located on the Qaqawiñay mountain, the Salineras are owned by the local community who makes their livelihood off the salt they harvest. It features over 3,000 salt pans. It was believed to be built by the Waris (prior to the arrival of the Incas).
[ Location & Getting there ]
The Salineras are located in the Sacred Valley, about 1 hour from Cusco. You can take a tour (which I’ll discuss in a bit) and which might be the easiest option. However, while researching, some people discuss the Taxi option – this blog post covers it pretty well. I like that it’s more flexible and allows you to work at your own pace. We were in a big group, but if we were 2-4 people I think the taxi option would have been ideal.
[ Booking a tour ]
Many tours combine a visit to the Salineras with the Inca ruins of Moray. We opted out of the Moray visit as the entrance fee was 70 soles (about $21 USD). However, if you’re interested in visiting, I would recommend buying the Cusco Tourist Pass for 130 soles (about $39 USD) which covers not only Moray, but quite a few other attractions.
Pro Tip: I would recommend booking a tour once you’re already in Cusco ( cost is about 30-40 soles, then another 10 soles to enter the salineras). We booked this tour in advance because we wanted to ride ATVs which was very unique. That being said, the tour was really focused on riding the ATVs, and we got about 20 minutes at the salineras. You’ll need at least 30-45 minutes, which is why I wouldn’t 100% recommend the tour I was on.
[ Tips for the Salineras ]
- Pro Tip 1: When buying your tour, ask how long you’ll have at the salt mines
- IF you decide to take a guided tour, be sure to ask how long you’ll have at the site. Like I mentioned above, you’ll want at least 45min – 1 hour to walk around and buy any souvenirs. That would be a deal breaker for me!
- Pro Tip 2: Check if the entrance to the Salineras is included in your tour.
- Again, IF you decide to take a guided tour, be sure to ask if the entrance fee is included. We were unclear before booking, and while it’s only a difference of $3 USD, it’s worth knowing as you haggle your way to booking!
- Pro Tip 3: Booking a taxi? Determine a set price before leaving
- When traveling internationally, this is my usual rule when it comes to taxis. People can try to take advantage with the meter, so pre-determine with the driver the cost.
- Pro Tip 4: Don’t forget to buy salt on your way out
- I think that salt from Maras is actually one of the most unique souvenirs I found. Unfortunately, I had all of 5 minutes to make my purchases. You won’t find it anywhere else in Cusco, so stock up!
