Are you off to explore San Francisco? Maybe for an event, a weekend, or even a staycation (my favorite one!)?
I recently had the honor of attending San Francisco Fashion Week with some of my favorite bloggers and working with The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel near Union Square. Typically, when it comes to events in the city we drive up from the South Bay and drive back. But this time we wanted to have a little staycation and turn it into a weekend! The Clift is one of those hotels that around every corner you discover a new piece of California history while being in a chic and vintage meets modern setting.
Please note, this blog post was created in collaboration with The Clift Hotel, but all thoughts are my own.

5 Things you May Not Know About The Clift Hotel in San Francisco
Fact 1: The 8ft Chair in the Lobby was commissioned by designer Philippe Starck and has a painting underneath as a nod to his children.
If you crawl under the large chair in the lobby, and look up you’ll see a painting. This was created for the children of the hotel, as it is something that only a child might find while playing under the chair. (I may have snuck a peak under there before hopping on on the hair). PS: the hotel lobby was designed by Philippe Starck, and the furniture features chairs by Ray and Charles Eames.
Fact 2: The historical Redwood Room Bar & Lounge opened the day after the prohibition ended, and was created from one popular single redwood tree.
While on our tour, we learned that not only was the entire “Redwood Room” paneled with one single redwood, but during the remodel they found designs that were originally etched in the wood. The room features small bites & drinks.
Hours

- Sunday through Wednesday, 4:00PM – 1:00AM

Fact 3: The crack in the mirror featured on every floor was created to represent the California fault line.
The lobby area on each floor features a large glass mirror (I loved it for a last minute outfit check before hitting the elevator), but it is a small nod to California history with the modern representation of the fault line.
Fact 4: If you pull the purple chair you find in each room forwards, there is a wheel attached which gives a nod to the California Gold Rush.
When we walked into our room and noticed the purple chair, I never would have thought to pull it forwards. It really blended into the environment, but had the coolest little detail! Another fun fact – the coffee table matches the elevators (which have those clear colorful walls). Rooms also feature 300-thread count percale bedding, down duvets and imported Merino wool throw blanket. You can guess I was asleep immediately after tucking myself into bed! See all of the Clift’s room options here.
Fact 5: The apartment on the top floor was originally where owner Frederick C. Clift lived & the chair you see by the elevators was from his apartment.
The apartment on the top floor used to be Frederick C. Clift’s private quarters, featuring an array of antiques like the chair above. As you can tell he had quite the obsession with chairs. I counted 20 (and there’s probably more hiding around the hotel!)
A couple of my favorite features from the Private Apartment:
- 1,175 sq. ft.
- Living room & Dining table
- Decorative Venetian Murano glass touches
- Tasteful décor, featuring Philippe Starck-designed English sycamore custom furniture
